On Christmas Day 1914, England was at war with Germany, but that didn't ruin Christmas completely. In a famous truce guns fell silent, troops shook hands and football became peacemaker. German soldiers simply left their trenches and walked into neutral territory. What happened was entirely spontaneous, without the consent of officers, and the story goes that no-one kept score.
