Green IT growing in importance
IT professionals need to have a firm grasp on the ins and outs of green IT as it has become increasingly important, an expert has said.
Aman Munglani, principal analyst at Gartner Research, told expresscomputeronline.com that the issue had risen to prominence in the span of two years, growing "from a whisper to a major theme".
Though he acknowledged that environmental concerns played a part in its increasing pertinence, Mr Munglani said the key aim was to cut costs.
"Most technologies being marketed as green today are really technologies designed to improve utilization, which enables organizations to do more with less and, in turn, reduce costs," he noted.
The pressure for organisations to act with green interests in mind has been ramped up by concerns about climate change and the role that technology might be able to play in alleviating it.
Simon Bullock, senior campaigner for Friends of the Earth, warned the government it was sending out "mixed messages" in the wake of proposals to cut funding for green technology.
