Virtualisation a top enterprise IT concern

Virtualisation and cost management have topped a new study investigating the most pressing enterprise IT concerns, with IT staffing also making the list.

The latest SHARE survey, which investigated the views of 160 business IT buyers, highlighted a number of areas in which companies are looking to invest.

Rather broad in outlook, IT cost management took the top spot, ahead of the fast-rising technology of virtualisation.

Delivering a competitive advantage from IT was nominated as the third greatest priority, while enterprise security, IT staffing and business continuity followed in the top ten.

Cloud computing, regulatory compliance, reinvigorating the mainframe and data centre energy management completed the chart.

SHARE president Al Williams said businesses were recognising the various ways in which technology can improve their operations.

"It's not enough to just cut costs - the successful enterprise IT professional knows there is a need to demonstrate IT's value and how it can provide a competitive advantage every day."

Last month, technology commentator Paul Strassmann told Signal Scape that business can reap instant cost rewards by migrating to server virtualisation.

He claimed the technology represents a highly attractive option, especially with IT budgets still constrained.
