"We filled the vacancy the next day"

UK sales of Google Android triple

Sales of Google's Android handset have tripled in the UK.

The mobile phone's share of the mobile phone contract market has grown from three per cent in the first quarter of the year to more than 13 per cent over the last three years, according to research group GfK.

Now around one in ten of all contract phones sold in the UK runs the Google Android operating system.

"Operating systems are no longer simply a by-product but a key selling point in their own right," Megan Baldock, an analyst with GfK, said.

The beginning of the year saw the release of Google Android's own-brand Nexus One handset.

It is believed the popularity of the Android devices is being driven by the increasing number of handsets that are available.

Google Android users will also soon be able to purchase applications from the Android Market using carrier billing, according to details revealed in Google's new Android terms and conditions.
