Post-experience qualifications crucial for a CIO role

Gaining qualifications once already in a job is the key to climbing the ladder, an expert has said.

Writing for Computing.co.uk, industry practitioner Sharm Manwani noted that the majority of chief information officers (CIOs) saw firsthand experience as more valuable than qualifications.

However, adding further certifications after working in the industry is one way to impress employers.

The fast-changing nature of IT means that the best candidates for promotion to roles such as that of a CIO will always be seeking to update their skills.

Mr Manwani added that IT qualifications were also constantly developing and were now more relevant than ever to the modern technologically-focussed society.

"I believe IT qualifications are reaching a new level of maturity," he said.

Greg Balestrero, chief executive of the Project Management Institute, said IT workers may find project management skills as useful as technology skills when it comes to delivering successful IT schemes.
