Sophos survey reveals cyberwarfare attitudes

The majority of people think it is ok for their country to employ cyberwarfare against another nation, a survey has revealed.

IT security firm Sophos carried out a study to establish people's attitudes toward the notion of using online espionage techniques, surveying 1,077 computer users worldwide.

According to the findings of the 2010 Security Threat Report, 63 per cent of respondents considered it acceptable for their nation's intelligence forces to use malware or hacking to spy on another country.

Four in ten conceded it would only be justified during wartime, but 23 per cent said it was ok at any time.

In addition, the company also revealed the US topped the list of the top ten malware hosting countries (42.29 per cent), while the UK came in sixth with 2.41 per cent.

Internet security specialist Symantec said recently that up to 90 per cent of cybercrime is a direct result of organised criminal gang activity.
