Green IT could help firms reduce carbon emissions

Tech professionals with a firm grasp of green IT could help businesses reduce their carbon emissions.

With pressure growing on all industries to reduce their carbon footprint, many companies are seeking ways to make their operation more eco-friendly and IT can play a key role.

However, the first target for businesses should be to identify where their emissions are coming from, according to the Centre for Alternative Technology.

"The first thing that any organisation can do is to do some kind of audit of their existing emissions or energy so that you know how much you are emitting and from what areas of your business," a spokesperson for the organisation said.

"Until you've done that you don't know what the key areas are to tackle. Once you have an understanding of where your emissions are coming from, you can look at the different options for reducing them in those areas."

Simon Bullock, senior campaigner for Friends of the Earth, warned the government it was sending out "mixed messages" in the wake of proposals to cut funding for green technology.
