Oil and gas firms to increase IT spending
The BP oil spill has forced oil and gas companies to revise their future IT spending, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC).
As a result of the disaster, regulatory changes are expected to be introduced and many firms are now turning to IT to improve their health and safety procedures.
With oil and gas companies now very much in the spotlight, their conduct is being scrutinised more closely than ever and they recognise the need to act quickly to implement new strategies to prevent a reoccurrence of the BP incident.
"Prior to the disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, IDC's forecast for worldwide spending by oil & gas companies on HSE software was predicted to top $131 million in 2010," said Rick Nicholson, vice president of research at IDC Energy Insights.
"The expected regulatory changes could potentially double the growth rate of spending on these applications during the next two to three years."
The flow of oil into the Gulf of Mexico from the BP spill was finally stemmed two weeks ago.
