Top IT figures sign up to Gates giveaway

Some of the biggest names in IT have lent their support to a campaign to donate half their fortunes to charity.

Microsoft boss Bill Gates is spearheading the drive, called the Giving Pledge, alongside investor Warren Buffett.

So far a total of 40 other billionaires have signed up and pledged to give huge sums of money to good causes.

Included among them is Larry Ellison, the Oracle founder thought to be worth around $28 billion (£17.6 billion).

Gate's Microsoft co-founder, Paul Allen, is also taking part, with his fortune estimated by Forbes to amount to $13.5 billion, while former Cisco chairman John Morgridge has approximately $1.6 billion in the bank.

"We've really just started but already we've had a terrific response," Buffett said in a statement.

Harvard University dropout Gates founded Microsoft with Allen in 1975 and has consistently been ranked among the richest men in the world since 1990.
