IT spending forecast cut but still show increase

Spending on IT will rise by 2.9 per cent this year, Gartner has forecast.

The analyst's forecast is lower than the previous view that spending would show a 4.1 per cent increase but it still leaves the total spend at $2.4 trillion (£1.5 trillion).

"The enterprise IT market will certainly return to growth in 2010, but we now expect it will grow by only 2.9 per cent globally, down from 4.1 per cent growth we had forecast earlier this year," said Kenneth Brant, research director at Gartner.

Mr Brant added that national and international government sectors would see the most significant growth, with expectations of a four per cent rise.

However, local and regional governments are only likely to see a 1.7 per cent rise in IT spending.

Earlier this week, Socitm urged businesses to continue to invest in IT but advised them to make sure spending was steady.
