IT can help governments reduce costs

Governments should be seeking to utilise new technologies to aid cost-cutting initiatives while maintaining effective levels of service, Gartner has said.

The industry analyst's latest report, entitled From Modernisation to Survival, suggests that budget reductions are being carried out without a proper assessment of the role IT can play.

It argues that services including public clouds, teleworking and community source projects should all be considered as tools to save money without radically undermining key services.

However, Gartner's report does concede that there are security concerns that need to be assuaged first.

"Regulatory barriers when it comes to teleworking or cloud computing could slow its use, but this is typical risk aversion as most of these actions require doing things differently," said Andrea Di Maio, report author and a vice president at Gartner.

The analyst firm recently announced that global IT spending will rise by 2.9 per cent before the end of 2010.
