MoD 'at risk of online attacks'
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) is at risk of cyber attacks, the organisation's accounting officer has revealed.
Bill Jeffrey said in the MoD's resource accounts for 2009-10 that data losses and weaknesses had left the department vulnerable to online threats.
He noted that steps are being taken to respond to the dangers but concerns remain over how robust current strategies will be in the face of a virtual attack.
"In addition to the risks posed by data losses and information infrastructure, the risk presented to the department by threats to cyber security is of increasing concern," Mr Jeffrey stated.
"The department is working to improve awareness of the risks of cyber attack, and capability to respond to it flexibly and effectively."
As a result of significant past data losses, the MoD has undertaken work to restrict the use of unencrypted media, he added.
Recently, it was announced that more than 92 per cent of MoD staff have completed the appropriate level of awareness training in relation to information security.
