IT industry not clued up on carbon legislation

The majority of IT firms are not fully aware of the implications of the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme, it has been revealed.

Companies that are eligible for the scheme have until the September 30th to sign up or they will face fines, but less than 25 per cent of those have registered so far.

The scheme is aimed at regulating and reducing carbon emissions in the UK in order to combat global warming.

There are a number of approaches that IT organisations can adopt in order to improve their environmental credentials.

PC power management is one measure which also represents a cost-effective means of reducing emissions, while initiatives such as virtualisation and cloud computing can also help.

For those forms that embrace the scheme, there is an opportunity to lower costs and gain a competitive edge.

Simon Bullock, senior campaigner for Friends of the Earth, warned the government it was sending out "mixed messages" in the wake of proposals to cut funding for green technology.
