Environment Agency to enhance green IT credentials

The Environment Agency is set to boost its green IT credentials with help from Capgemini.

It will use the outsourcing provider's Merlin data centre, which is supposed to be the world's most energy efficient and sustainable.

A spokesman from the agency revealed it would adopt the data centre in September.

According to Capgemini, its 30,000 square foot facility will raise the bar for energy efficiency because of its power usage effectiveness (PUE), which is the best of any data centre globally.

The industry standard PUE is approximately 2.5, while the Merlin data centre produces a level of 1.08.

It consists of 12 modules, each 2,500 square metres in area. The Environment Agency will use two of these modules, and Capgemini is in talks with other customers regarding the use of the remaining ten.

Its energy efficiency is aided by the cooling system is uses, whereby each module is equipped with a dedicated air optimiser which controls the climate for optimum efficiency.
