IT services sector bounces back in Q2

The number of deals announced in the IT services sector increased in the second quarter (Q2), signalling a recovery after slow start to the year.

Figures from Ovum reveal a 14 per cent increase in Q2 compared to the first quarter (Q1), but the analyst's warning over the impact of public sector cuts and continuing difficulties in the private sector means it wasn't all good news.

However, Q2 of 2010 was still the best period of growth for the sector in the past 12 months, a remarkable turnaround after it fell to its lowest level since 2007 during the first three months of the year.

Ovum reports that 457 deals were completed during Q2, 56 higher than in the previous quarter. Despite this rise, the total contract value fell by 14 per cent to $30.8 billion (£19.6 billion).

During the first three months of the year, the UK technology sector saw the most mergers and acquisitions in Europe, Ernst and Young's global technology M&A report revealed.
