Virtual learning to 'grow in Europe'
Growth in virtual learning at Europe's universities could result in an increase in infrastructure recruitment and spending.
According to new research by Ovum, virtual learning environments will become the norm at many higher education institutions because of economic and resourcing pressures.
Ovum believes that the recent economic downturn has undermined existing university structures and institutions will have to invest in both infrastructure and infrastructure recruitment if they are to remain competitive.
Jessica Tsai, Ovum education technology analyst, said: "Universities are coming under increasing pressure to spend their money wisely, or face losing funding.
"As economic pressures increase, utilising virtual learning environments will become more critical to universities, if they are to meet any of their objectives."
She added that there are a huge number of benefits to virtual learning environments and the technology has gone way beyond uploading course materials and posting grades.
New research conducted by the Carbon Trust's Footprinting Company has shown that investment in energy efficient IT equipment can save organisations money in the long run.
