'Sea of change' in IT industry
There has been a "sea of change" in the IT industry as a result of the economic downturn, according to an expert.
Gerry McLaughlin, of ITContractor.com, noted the drastic shift that has occurred since the onset of the global financial crisis.
"In previous downturns IT was seen as a cost and, as with the marketing budget, it was easy to cut," he said. "However, this time around IT was seen as both a cost-cutting enabler and as too crucial to the business."
Mr McLaughlin added that "the biggest differentiator" for companies now is access to business information.
In addition, he noted that businesses were keen not to let the recession impact on their ability to take up new software components or fall behind their rivals in terms of products and services.
Daniel Rogers, chief executive officer of Think Smart IT, advised that business leaders should use technology to increase efficiency.
