Organisations must 'beef up security controls'
The ongoing threat of computer viruses and malware should force businesses to "beef up" their security measures, an expert has said.
Fran Howarth, practice leader at Bloor Research, writing for IT Director, noted that malicious attacks are becoming increasingly common.
She cited the example of the ILOVEYOU worm, which was unleashed ten years ago via email and rapidly infected up to ten per cent of computers worldwide.
This led to a drastic rethink on the importance of online security and Ms Howarth outlined some of the options open to organisations.
For some firms, it may be preferable to keep web and email security in-house, but others may look to the cloud for answers.
"Organisations need to assess the risks that they face to ensure that the investments that they make in security suit the needs of their particular organisation," Ms Howarth said.
Recent research by Symantec claimed 2009 saw a 100 per cent increase in the number of malware threats facing firms when compared to the previous year.
