Green IT 'remains immature'

Green IT is still in its infancy across many parts of the world and the industry is not likely to meet the target to offset its emissions by 2020, according to new findings.

A study from Fujitsu found that the more environmentally-friendly form of IT remains immature in the UK, US, Australia and India.

According to a survey of 600 chief information officers and IT managers across the four nations, the UK and US are outperforming the other two countries but are still falling short of the expected levels of carbon reduction.

In a statement, Fujitsu's global executive director sustainability, Alison O’Flynn, said while sustainable IT had been topical in recent times, "real action and progress had been slow".

Recent research from analyst IDC found that the G20 nations could cut their CO2 emissions by 25 per cent to 2020.

At present, only Japan has achieved a Tier 1 ranking in the firm's Sustainability Index, with the US, France, Germany, Brazil and the UK falling into Tier 2 in that order.
