How to deal with a CFO who always says no

For IT department leaders, having a chief financial officer (CFO) whose favourite word is no can be a stumbling block that kills innovation.

But industry expert Bob Lewis, writing in an advice column for tech professionals on InfoWorld.com, noted that there are ways to overcome the problem.

He suggested that all CFOs are under pressure to increase revenue but the key is for them to recognise spending on IT as an investment that can provide a return.

For people in the role of chief information officer, leading at IT department, the task is to prove that putting money into technology, rather than cutting funding, is the way to drive innovation and growth.

"First of all, do your own analysis as to why it is the CFO turns things down so reflexively," Mr Lewis advised. "You might even decide to sit down and ask him directly."

Ultimately, all employees within a company should be driving for the same goals, so a considered approach to working together to achieve them should result in some common ground being established, he concluded.

In an anonymous blog for Silicon.com, one industry professional said that IT departments had to ensure they were internally unified in order to achieve their targets.
