Government seeks help on ID measures

The government is asking for help from IT suppliers for a new approach to identity verification.

A pre-tender notice has been published in the Official Journal of the European Union by DirectGov, now part of the Cabinet Office team, detailing its desire for feedback on potential requirement for the public sector on all aspects of identity verification and authentication.

Any process of accreditation will need to be based on defined policies and standards, however, the commercial basis of the provision of services has not been determined.

Plans for a national identity card were scrapped recently but Stephen Roberts, research director at Kable, said the move may represent the government's wish to devise an authentication mechanism that would encourage higher public usage than the Government Gateway.

He said: "Whether the Government Gateway is to be replaced or enhanced, the barriers to joined up public sector identity management are political rather than technical. Similarly, this broad appeal to suppliers for feedback may reflect to new approach to procurement as much as a hunger for innovation."
