Innovation must lead the way as CIOs seek to do more with less

Chief information officers (CIOs) and their IT departments must continue to strive to do more with less, with innovation driving a post-recession recovery.

New data from Gartner reveals that there is still some hesitancy among business leaders to restore budgets and staff numbers to the levels they were at prior to the economic downturn.

According to a survey of 368 US-based firms, recruitment has picked up and the median rate of increase in IT headcount was 6.3 per cent by way of a year-on-year comparison.

With similar trends observed here in the UK, the consistent messages appears to be that strides are being made towards recovery but progress remains slow and steady rather than rapid.

In the meantime, CIOs have to look for ways to justify an increase in their budgets by demonstrating the return on investment that can be gained from IT-led innovations in their company's strategy.

Industry commentary Nigel Fenwick recently said on CIO.com that businesses should loosen their purse strings and allow new technology investments to drive growth.
