Fear of computer viruses may be unfounded

Businesses and consumers have little to fear from the threat of computer viruses if they take appropriate action to keep their security up to date.

The advice comes from Tony Neate, chief executive of Get Safe Online, who said many people were unnecessarily afraid of threats to their online security.

Recent research by Avira revealed that one in three people think all websites are potentially harmful, highlighting the level of paranoia.

"People need to be aware of it and people need to take action in relation to their security and that action needs to be done across the board both for their personal protection and their PC and laptop's protection," Mr Neate said.

Any increase in computer viruses will be in line with the number of people using the internet, he added.

"It is about protecting your PC and protecting yourself because criminals now don't just attack the hardware, they attack the integrity of the individual as well," Mr Neate concluded.
