Do more firms need a security tsar?
Businesses should consider appointing a chief information security officer to bolster their data security, an expert has advised.
Industry commentator Mike Samuels, writing for Silicon.com, underlined the importance of information security and suggested the best way for businesses to ensure good practice in this area may be to have a dedicated professional overseeing operations.
Citing the example of Mike Newman, an IT leader who recently appointed a full-time head of IT security "as part of a higher-level strategy to prioritise the integrity of information", Mr Samuels praised the fresh-thinking of such an approach.
Mr Newman described data security as "fundamental" and called on IT professionals to ensure they made it a priority.
"We need smart security guys to stop the potential exposure of data and to make sure that the corporate use of information follows best practice," he told the news provider.
Industry analyst Phillip Alsop recently noted that IT security professionals can play an integral role in improving the efficiency of the companies they work for. He said those looking to bolster their response to security risks should undertake a thorough overview of data management strategies.
