Think tank urges government IT commoditisation

The government could make large-scale savings by commoditising its IT, according to a paper from the Network for the Post Bureaucratic Age.

In the document, titled Better for Less, the think tank also advises the government to break down its IT projects into smaller chunks, Register reports.

Combining these two approaches to IT project management could help the government achieve its budget deficit reduction plans.

The paper details a framework labelled the Innovate-Leverage-Commoditise (ILC) model, which is aimed at simplifying complex services by isolating the commodity and non-commodity elements.

In addition, the publications calls for the creation of a Commoditise Group, which would be centrally operated and work with supplies to configure standardised, low risk and low margin services.

One of the paper's authors, Liam Maxwell, told GC News: "We want to provide a framework for government to look at the situation and identify ways of delivering better services for less.

"It's really obvious that way too much money is spent on IT in government, and the current government knows it."
