UK hardware and software markets appeal to foreign investors

The UK has been named the most attractive European country for foreign companies looking to invest in computer hardware and software development.

Data from the Ernst & Young European Attractiveness Survey also revealed London as the as the number one city, having secured investment in 49 software projects and 12 hardware projects in 2009.

An analysis of international investments in Europe shows that the region saw 3,303 investment announcements last year, representing an 11 per cent decline from 2008.

In total, the UK attracted foreign direct investment in 119 software projects, up from 102 the previous year.

In hardware computing, meanwhile, foreign direct investment funded 17 major projects, more than double 2008's figure. American firms were the biggest investors in British software and hardware ventures.

Cambridge also featured in the top ten hardware cities, while France came second in both the list of the top ten software countries and top ten hardware countries.
