EU cloud computing drive could boost infrastructure recruitment

The European Union's digital agenda commissioner Neelie Kroes has claimed that every nation in the union has to be "cloud active".

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, he said that while the EU usually waits for clear definitions of a given technology before recommending it, in the case of cloud computing businesses and recruiters just need to take the plunge.

Mr Kroes said: "This is a complex situation and nobody is likely to have all the answers. And cloud computing, in some form, will happen anyway.

"But the EU has a role to play: we can make it happen smoother and faster."

His comments highlight the growing importance of cloud computing as a means of outsourcing IT infrastructure and applications.

He added: "I have started work on an EU-wide cloud computing strategy. This goes beyond a policy framework."

Stephanie Baghdassarian, research director at Gartner, recently claimed that businesses need to develop clear mobile app strategies if they are to remain competitive.
