"We filled the vacancy the next day"
Young IT recruits should consider work experience
Work experience is becoming increasingly important for young job-seekers in all fields - including IT infrastructure and applications development.
According to REC, the move by employment minister Chris Grayling to boost the number of work experience opportunities for young people should be commended.
The REC said the policy was a core recommendation put forward by its Youth Employment Taskforce.
For those looking for a leg-up in the IT sector, the government is considering boosting the maximum amount of time a person can spend on work experience placements from two to eight weeks.
Gillian Econopouly, the REC’s head of policy, said: "Even those with strong academic backgrounds recognise the need to complement this with some practical experience.
"Increasing university fees and the abolition of the Education Maintenance Allowance will make it increasingly important to ensure that there is a swift transition into the world of work."
The government's new work experience matching scheme will also allow young people to hold onto their benefits whilst undertaking a placement.
