General Dynamics UK awarded £231m MoD contract

General Dynamics UK could be set to increase its recruitment of defence staff with communications expertise after being awarded a new £231 million contract.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has charged the firm with upgrading its Bowman technology, it has been announced.

In particular, improvements will be made to planning and system management applications, while synergy with other UK and Allied networks will be overhauled.

Performance and sustainability will also be scrutinised under the deal, which is split into two agreements.

The first is worth £119 million and will refresh the capabilities of the organisation's IT infrastructure, while the second £112 portion is aimed at long-term technical support such as repairs and field services.

Minister for defence equipment and support, Quentin Davies, explained the government was keen to build on the success of Bowman during recent combat in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"Secure, faster communications and data exchange is saving lives on the front line. It is a key element of a comprehensive suite of communications systems to provide a robust network," he said.

Earlier this year, the MoD launched a Defence Technology Plan, which it said underlines the importance of science and innovation in providing the latest kit for the battlefield.ADNFCR-2165-ID-19248891-ADNFCR
