IT recruitment boost 'due to technology upgrades'

Organisations choosing to upgrade technology systems in early 2010 is a main reason behind the recent increase in IT recruitment of staff such as financial services specialists, according to one expert.

A report published yesterday (March 3rd) by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation and KPMG showed a strong rise in permanent employment in February, particularly in the IT sector.

Adrian Marlowe, chair of the Association of Recruitment Consultants, said he believed the UK's emergence from recession may be behind the results.

"Having laid low for 18 months or so, those organisations that have larger IT requirements are taking the view that they need to upgrade their systems," he explained.

Mr Marlowe added that the resurgence of the banking sector in the last six months was also driving IT recruitment.

"[Banks] have been recruiting generally to increase their workforces," he said. "It follows that if they are reconfiguring, they are also considering what they should be doing in relation to their IT systems."

However, Mr Marlowe went on to express caution as to whether this increase in employment would remain a continuous trend.
