"We filled the vacancy the next day"

Could the desktop PC be dead in three years?

The desktop PC will be dead in three years, according to Google.

Vice president of global ad operations at the search engine giant, John Herlihy, told Silicon Republic that the boom in mobile internet access could alter the way we use computing forever.

"Mobile makes the world's information universally accessible," explained Mr Herlihy, adding that Google was making a push to dominate the mobile, cloud and connectivity sectors.

In contrast, Cliff Saran, managing editor of Computer Weekly magazine, said he believed people would continue to run desktop applications, only on smaller technology which he termed "thin client devices".

However, these thin client applications require a continuous internet connection which Mr Saran claimed may pose issues for security.

"Wherever there's a security concern, there's a worry your application [and its internet access] will be restricted," he said.

This could hit financial services specialists and workers in governmental centres, he added, meaning that there will still be a market for the desktop PC in 2013.
