Mobile VoIP 'has potential to be widely adopted'

Mobile Voice-over Internet Protocol (VoIP) will become established as internet-enabled mobile phones become increasingly commonplace, it has been claimed.

According to an estimate published last week by market research firm In-Stat, mobile VoIP users will number 288 million by the end of 2013.

George Van Horn, senior analyst at industry market research company IBISWorld, agrees that there is "huge potential" for the widespread introduction of mobile VoIP.

Mr Van Horn explained that the "vast majority" of worldwide broadband connections over the next decade will be accessed via handheld devices, making extensive mobile VoIP adoption possible.

"High-definition VoIP will play a role in improving phone call quality and service options, which will contribute to the growing user base," he explained.

VoIP is already popular with many public sector specialists thanks to its potential cost savings and productivity benefits.

Last month, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) announced it had extended a £237 million deal with BT to expand and support its VoIP network.

DWP chief operating officer Dean James recently revealed how creating a converged VoIP network linking more than 20,000 customer service agents had helped the government department save £1.5 billion.
