Next-generation broadband to 'benefit everyone'

The provision of next-generation broadband internet will have a positive effect on communities and businesses, providing a valuable service and a new means of generating revenue.

With the government embarking on ambitious plans to deliver next-generation broadband to 90 per cent of the country by 2017 through Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK), which will manage a £1 billion Next Generation Fund, broadband has become a key piece of hardware for developers and consumers alike.

Shane Wright, technical director for eDigitalResearch, says the initiative to bring the new high-speed internet service to a wide range of areas would build on the existing commitment to roll out 2Mbps internet access to every household by 2012.

"Pervasive access to the internet through fast connections benefits everyone," he said, adding that it would benefit rural areas and local services, as well as supporting online sales and information channels for businesses.

The UK's average broadband speeds are around 3.67Mbps according to a survey conducted by broadband.co.uk at the beginning of 2009
