Tablet computers 'could soon supersede e-readers'

Tablet-style computers such as the Apple iPad could soon supersede dedicated ebook readers, digital media specialists may be interested to know.

The Apple iPad could capture 40 per cent of the e-reader market within 90 days of its launch, according to figures published last week by the emerging technologies research network ChangeWave.

Stuart Miles, owner and editor of independent consumer electronics news and reviews website Pocket-lint, said that a tablet computer "may be a better ebook reader".

He explained that, with the PC market "shifting towards a tablet-style device", consumers will have the choice to read ebooks from "a screen that does lots more" than an ereader.

Mr Miles described ereaders as an "interim technology" that "serves a purpose," but said that he did not expect them to exist in their current form in five years' time.
