"We filled the vacancy the next day"
iPhone named number one handset
The iPhone has been named the public's favourite phone of the last 25 years, netting Apple's legendary hardware developers yet another accolade.
A survey conducted by researchers at the University of Salford revealed the device was seen as the ultimate handset, significantly outstripping its nearest rivals, the Nokia 3210 and Nokia 6310.
Professor Nigel Linge conducted the survey, polling more than 2,000 votes in order to get a snapshot from the British public of the last quarter-century's mobile developments.
"I am not surprised that the Apple iPhone topped our poll, for it became a design classic the moment it was launched and truly transformed the design of mobile phones," he said.
"Personally though, I'm nostalgic for the Motorola StarTAC which was the world's first clam shell phone but it fell outside of our top ten, being in twelfth place."
While Apple's iconic design netted the top spot, Nokia's five entries in the top ten and Motorola's three suggest the two mobile manufacturers, which reigned as market leaders for many years, are also well-regarded.
