"We filled the vacancy the next day"
Mobile TV gathers momentum
Development in the mobile digital hardware market could see over-the-air TV broadcasting brought to handsets, creating a new industry.
Mobile digital television is touted as the ideal method for enabling the transmission of programmes, making use of the radio-frequency spectrum.
A new group representing the nascent industry, the Open Mobile Video Coalition, which includes 900 broadcast TV stations in the US, is now predicting that the new technology will become a staple part of the future telecommunications infrastructure.
As well as television programmes, users will be able to access news and information, as well as emergency alerts.
"Now that digital TV broadcasting is going mobile, we strongly believe that Mobile DTV is a key ingredient in the nation's drive to deliver timely news, information, and entertainment to our country's citizens," said Brandon Burgess, president of the Open Mobile Video Coalition.
"And it's even faster, more reliable, and more scalable than information routed through the internet."
The use of mobile handsets for an increasing array of applications has been enabled by the new generation of smartphones, with products such as the iPhone establishing themselves in the consumer market.
