Social networking sites dominate digital media

Social networking sites are becoming the dominant platform online, with digital media experts in the field finding they are in growing demand.

Sites such as Facebook, Twitter and MySpace have become a staple part of consumers' internet diet, with seven in every ten users now said to be part of at least one social network.

With research firm InSites Consulting estimating the total market now spans almost one billion users, the prospects for digital media recruitment within the sector are encouraging.

Daniel Chubb, chief executive officer at social media news website Online Social Media, is among those who are expecting the industry to flourish.

"Users right now use Facebook and Twitter more times a day than they do the telephone," he commented, adding that the younger generation in particular were in constant contact with social media portals.

However, the digital media landscape is not simply comprised of the likes of Facebook, with Mr Chubb stressing that opportunities for digital media recruitment exist across a broad spectrum of sites, with many niche markets proving a popular - and profitable - source.
