"We filled the vacancy the next day"

Politics turns to digital media

Digital media is set continue its growing role in politics with Twitter and Facebook due to feature in a live televised debate between the would-be chancellors ahead of the general election.

Broadcast on Channel 4, which won the rights over the BBC to show tonight's debate, it will enable internet users to vote on which candidate they are most impressed by with real-time updates and results to be announced at the end of the programme.

Viewers will be able to watch via the internet and the debate will have dedicated Twitter stream and a Facebook page which, it is hoped, will attract a younger audience.

Politics and economics journalists will also be blogging during the broadcast and any mistakes made will be picked up on by political correspondent Cathy Newman, who will be fact-checking their comments throughout the show, the Times reports.

Digital media had a big part to play in the US elections which saw Barack Obama elected to the presidency.
