New technology enables Lloyds to track oil spills and ash clouds
Lloyds has launched a new IT system which will help it to monitor things such as oil spills and ash clouds, Computer Weekly reports.
The specialist insurance services provider has adopted technology that enables it to get live updates via an interactive map which uses geo-tagging and "mines the company's databases for relevant information" on events, the IT news provider said.
Peter Hambling, the firm's chief executive officer, told Computer Weekly that his company undertaken the project as part of its wider effort to respond instantly to major events.
"If you see a news alert coming up, you will also find the Lloyds report on pollution risk, for example, or the exposure limit. It provides away to get Lloyds' view on anything in real time," said Mr Hambling.
The BP oil spill and the ash cloud created by the Icelandic volcano have necessitated such a development in technology.
Lloyd's offers insurance services to businesses in over 200 countries and territories.
