Health minister: SCRs will be kept

The coalition government looks set to keep its centralised electronic medical records despite previous suggestions they could be scrapped.

Summary care records are an electronic record of a person's drug prescriptions and allergies and were introduced by the Labour government as part of a £12.7 billion overhaul of NHS IT.

Experts began working on the project in November last year but recent announcements surrounding budget cuts seemed to hint at the project's cancellation.

However, speaking in the House of Commons, health minister Simon Burns revealed: "Uploading of information to the summary care record will continue to take place."

Earlier this year, the SCR scheme was put on hold as it was unclear whether patients were aware they would automatically have an SCR unless they opted out.

Earlier this year Brian James, chief executive officer at the Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust, said IT professionals can play a key role in helping the NHS to deliver services by making the most of its unused potential.
