Healthcare industry wants secure data management

Secure data management is the most prevalent concern among healthcare professionals as hospitals shift from paper-based records to electronic systems.

The top IT spending priority for 2010 is disaster recovery, with 44 per cent of respondents to BridgeHead Software's global survey indicating as much.

According to the firm's Data Management Healthcheck 2010 survey, which studies hospitals' strategies for IT management, the digitising of paper records is the main focus for 35 per cent of medical institutions.

John McCann, director of marketing at BridgeHead Software, said IT professionals in the healthcare sector had a vital role to play in assuaging hospitals' concerns.

"When healthcare information systems go down, bringing that information back online is an intricate process. Healthcare IT professionals need to know which applications and data have to be reinstated, and in which order.

"Given this complexity, it is not surprising that disaster recovery is the top IT investment priority in healthcare today," he said.

Health minister Simon Burns recently announced in the House of Commons that the government will be pushing ahead with its summary care record scheme, which will establish a centralised electronic database of medical records.
