NHS IT spending revealed

The shape of NHS IT spending has been revealed in a written parliamentary answer.

Health minister Simon Burns revealed the figures under pressure from MPs but did not give a complete picture.

It was shown that the current spending on the National Programme for IT stands at £322 million, with supplier CSC taking the lion's share at £213 million, and the rest being shared between Fujitsu (£37.3 million), Atos (£33.8 million), Cable and Wireless UK (£23 million), and Accenture (£10 million).

For 2008-2009, the main NHS spending figure was £1.63 billion, but this does not cover all spending on ICT by the health service.

Burns highlighted the fact that the figures only comprise revenue expenditure, as reported through an annual national survey of IT investment.

The £1.63 billion spend by user base comes out with strategic health authorities bottom at £27 million, primary care trusts £682 million and far away in the lead, NHS trusts at £915 million.

Prior to the election, the level of IT spending committed to by the NHS was the subject of much debate, with the Conservative party saying the systems needed a radical overhaul.
