UK should be 'more decisive' when developing the digital economy
The UK needs to be more decisive if it is to capitalise on the potential of the IT industry to bolster recruitment and return the economy to growth.
According to the Economist Intelligence Unit's (EIU) Denis McCauley, there is a certain amount of uncertainty surrounding the UK's digital development strategy and this is jeopardising the country's standing in the global digital economy rankings.
McCauley said that as a result, EIU has "downgraded the UK's scores this year in the area of government policy and vision".
He also said that the decision to reduce the UK digital economy ranking from 13th in 2009 to 14th in 2010 was in part down to the significant improvements that South Korea and Taiwan had made to their IT infrastructure.
The Con-Lib coalition government is planning on encouraging private investment in next-generation broadband infrastructure, including boosting connectivity in rural areas.
It is hoped that switchover under-spend within the TV licence fee will free up cash for public support.
