Internet security threats driven by organised crime

Organised crime is responsible for the majority on online security attacks, it has been claimed.

According to internet security specialist Symantec, up to 90 per cent of modern cybercrime is a direct result of organised criminal gang activity.

The firm claims that the majority of these security threats are motivated by financial gain.

Commenting on Symantec's claim that four out of every five cybercrimes revolve around the theft of personal data, Threatscape managing director Dermot Williams told Tech Central: "Notoriety and bragging rights used to be behind the majority of activity. Now it's cold hard cash - pure and simple."

"The ingenuity and deviousness of these guys can be astonishing," he added.

Williams highlighted the hundreds of bogus donation websites that sprung up shortly after the Haiti earthquake as a prime example of how focused modern cybercriminals are on generating revenue at any cost.

Recently, industry expert Philip Alsop claimed that IT security professionals can help improve the efficiency of companies that they work for.
