Government spends thousands on applications development

The British government has spent thousands of pounds developing iPhone applications aimed at taxpayers.

According to the BBC, which submitted a Freedom of Information request to Whitehall, development costs for individual iPhone apps ranged from £10,000 to £40,000.

The applications covered everything from a travel advice application from the Foreign Office, to job hunting software.

However, it looks like software development for marketing purposes is set to come under closer scrutiny from ministers.

The BBC received a statement from the Cabinet Office which read: "The government recently announced a freeze on all marketing and advertising spend for this year and this includes iPhone applications."

"Future spend on iPhone development will be subject to strict controls: only essential activity, approved by the Efficiency and Reform Group, which is chaired by the minister for the Cabinet Office and the chief secretary to the Treasury, will be allowed."
