New security data security guidance issued by the ICO

The Information Commissioners Office (ICO) has issued new guidelines relating to businesses' data protection obligations.

According to the ICO, its new rulebook for online information, which runs to 44 pages, highlights the implications of not adhering to the Data Protection Act.

The ICO claims that rules encountered in the Data Protection Act are applicable to consumer information collected online or stored in any other format.

Social networking, cookie use and behavioural advertising were all the subject of amends to the ICO's guidance.

ICO chief executive Christopher Graham said: "Get privacy right and you will retain the trust and confidence of your customers and users; mislead consumers or collect information you don't need and you are likely to diminish customer trust and face enforcement action from the ICO."

Security issues surrounding the business use of social networking could have an impact on the IT security recruitment sector.

Recently, 360IT conducted a poll which showed that one in ten companies have avoided adopting cloud computing because of security concerns.
