One in ten NHS trusts failing on information security
A minority of NHS trusts are failing to protect sensitive data despite the imposition of heavy fines, it has been revealed.
One in ten trusts in England are on amber alert after scoring less than 70 per cent when completing the Information Governance Statement of Compliance (IG SoC) approved assessment.
In April, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) was given powers to fine bodies that fail to protect patient information up to £500,000, but Hytec says some are still not getting their acts together.
IT security professionals have been under pressure to prevent data security breaches, with more than 300 incidents reported to the ICO since 2007.
IG SoC is a mandatory process for all organisations wanting to gain access to Connecting for Health services.
Health minister Simon Burns recently outlined the shape of NHS IT spending in a written parliamentary answer. It was shown that current spending on the National Programme for IT stands at £322 million.
