"We filled the vacancy the next day"
MEMS sector set for return to growth
The market for Microelectromechanical sensors (MEMS) is set to return to growth after a two-year slump, it has been revealed.
According to research from iSuppli, the "recession-proof performance" of the mobile phone and consumer electronics sectors will boost MEMS to near-record revenues of $6.54 billion (£4.3 billion).
It represents an 11.1 per cent rise on the previous year and suggests the market has put the dark days of 2009 behind it, when a 6.8 per cent decline was posted.
Furthermore, the growth is expected to continue for the foreseeable future, with the market research firm expecting revenues approaching $10 billion by 2014.
MEMS are used in inkjet printheads, accelerometers, pressure sensors and gyroscopes along with a host of other technologies.
It is anticipated that entirely new types of MEMS actuators will bring significant additional revenue for switches or varicaps and autofocus for camera phones.
