Apple posts record revenue

Apple has posted record revenue for the third quarter of 2010 as the IT giant continues to strengthen its position as market leader.

Results for the fiscal quarter ending June 26th show $15.7 billion (£10.2 billion) in revenue with profit of $3.25 billion.

For the same period a year ago, revenue stood at $9.73 billion and the net quarterly profit was $1.83, although the gross margin has fallen from 40.9 per cent to 39.1.

International sales accounted for 52 per cent of the recorded revenue at the end of the quarter.

The firm sold 3.47 million Macs, 8.4 million iPhones and 9.41 million iPods during the period, while iPads, which went on sale midway through, saw sales of 3.27 million.

"It was a phenomenal quarter that exceeded our expectations all around, including the most successful product launch in Apple’s history with iPhone 4," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO.

In May this year, Apple surpassed Microsoft as the world's biggest IT company.
