Brits 'not taking advantage of information technology'
Only 20 per cent of people in the UK are "information-savvy citizens", according to recent research, applications recruitment specialists may be interested to know.
The study published last week by the British Computer Society (BCS), the Chartered Institute for IT, suggests the majority of the population is not benefiting from the full social, cultural and commercial benefits of the modern, information-driven society.
A spokesperson for BCS said the lack of those taking advantage of IT services was due to a combination of people not having the means to access the information they want, not knowing the information they want exists and not knowing how to use it if they do.
"This issue goes beyond access," the spokesperson said, explaining that an internet connection cannot be exploited without knowing how to use it safely or what resources it makes available.
She listed economic and social deprivation, educational barriers, location, technological limits and physical disability as some of the many factors that "mean that some members of the public are not benefitting fully from information".
